New on the
Stage Door Pop imprint is the debut CD release of Gloria Hunniford's 1979
studio album A Taste of Hunni.
In a trail blazing career spanning over 7 decades,
Gloria Hunniford is one of Britain's foremost figures in broadcasting, earning her National Treasure status through her pioneering work on radio and television. Music has always underpinned Gloria's career, and this new release, Gloria's first retrospective album collection, celebrates Gloria, The Singer.
From supporting Roy Orbison on tour, to being unmasked as Snow Leopard on ITV's
The Masked Singer, Gloria Hunniford's singing career has been nothing short of remarkable.
Heralded as "Ireland's Queen of Song", Gloria's life in music began at an early age as a child performer in Northern Ireland before moving to Canada where she had her own radio series performing Irish songs. Returning to Ireland, Gloria made her first record in 1969, releasing a cover of the Song for Europe entry
Are You Ready for Love, Written and produced by Alan
Hawkshaw, the song reached the Top 10 in the Ulster Charts. Gloria was continually in demand as a singer during the late Sixties and early Seventies, performing frequently on television, in cabaret and concert, even supporting Roy Orbison when he toured Northern Ireland in 1969.
In 1979, Gloria recorded the album A Taste of Hunni. A stunning and timeless collection of popular standards and evergreens, the album was produced and arranged by Eurovision veteran
Noel Kelehan. The album showcases Gloria as a gifted song stylist. Highlights include
The Way We Were, Feelings, You Are the Sunshine of My Life and
Give the Children Back their Childhood, a song dear to Gloria and one she revisited in 1988, re-recording the track for
Children in Need. The album is also notable for Gloria's disco interpretations of
What the World Needs Now and The More I See You, showcasing her range and versatility as a performer.
"When I heard this album was to be released, I can't begin to tell you how thrilled I was. It's a collection of
"never to be out of fashion" middle of the road songs I played endlessly on BBC Radio 2 when I had the pleasure of a daily programme for 13 years.
So many memories are tied up in this album, I really hope you enjoy listening to it, and a huge thanks for joining me on a trip down memory lane."
- Gloria Hunniford
Digitally remastered, A Taste of Hunni now makes its debut on CD. The release is further complemented by the inclusion of Gloria's debut single
Are You Ready for Love and her 1988 Children in Need song Give the Children Back Their
Childhood, plus a foreword in the CD booklet penned by Sir Cliff
Richard.
